The Dumbbell Nebula (M27, NGC 6853), also known as the Apple Core Nebula or Diablo Nebula, is a planetary nebula located about 1,360 light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula.
"Spotted by Charles Messier in 1764... (it) was the first planetary nebula ever discovered. The term 'planetary nebula' is a bit of a misnomer based on the nebula’s round, planet-like appearance when viewed through smaller telescopes. The nebula is the result of an old star that has shed its outer layers in a glowing display of color."  (NASA Science)
In the updated version below, four nights of imaging data were combined to capture a more detailed look at M27.  The additional exposure time brings out more detail in both the core of the nebula as well as in the gas clouds that surround it.
